All hail the Frisco Bell 2013

When the clock strikes 12 p.m. on a crisp Thanksgiving afternoon, KHS and Webster Groves High School will go head-to-head in a friendly (or not-so-friendly) competition for the title of Turkey Day Champions and the Frisco Bell. Starting this week, both schools will participate in dress-up days, hallway decorating, cook-offs and other activities that will lead up to the 106th Turkey Day football game Nov. 28.

Time line of events for Spirit Week (Nov. 25-Nov. 28th)Luke

Monday, Nov. 25:

Tacky Day: Students dress in orange and black clothing to resemble their rivals, Webster Groves Statesmen. Webster Groves, however, dresses in red and white to resemble their rivals, Kirkwood.

Hallway Decorating: Each grade participates in their hallway decorations and themes from 3-9 p.m. Seniors traditionally are allowed to stay longer. Grade levels will be assigned to different hallways throughout the school and design their hallway based on a theme.

Tuesday, Nov. 26:

Spirit Day: Students dress up in red and white to support the Kirkwood Pioneers. Webster Groves will also dress in their school colors, orange and black.

KHS pep rally: Located in David Holley Assembly Hall for all students and staff at 1:40 p.m. Here, winners of the Turkey Day hallways are announced. The senior skit, KHS pommies, cheerleaders and drum line will be a part of the pep rally as well.

Wednesday, Nov. 27:

No School: Thanksgiving recess. The district is closed.

Chili Cook-Off: Denver Miller Gymnasium, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Community Pep Rally: The pep rally for students, the pep rally begins at 7 p.m. After the pep rally, there will be a bonfire.

Thursday, Nov. 28:

Turkey Day Game: The traditional football game between Kirkwood and Webster Groves kicks off at 12 p.m. at the KHS Lyons Stadium. The Winner of the game receives the Frisco Bell. At the game, the winner of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) football sales between KHS and Webster will be announced.

The Kirkwood Call went around and asked staff members at KHS their favorite parts about Spirt Week and the Turkey Day tradition.

“I think it’s one of the longest traditions in Missouri. It’s a fun high school rivalry and of course I love the hallways. I guess I like the whole shabang.”

“My favorite part is the game. We’ve played it forever and the atmosphere and interaction with the alumni and current students is the truest homecoming process.”

The Kirkwood Call went around and asked students at KHS their favorite parts about Spirit Week and the Turkey Day tradition.

“Definitely the hallways. With being on Student Council, I was excited to help pick out the theme too.”

“The pep rallies because everybody gets excited to beat Webster and everyone is together and cheering. I really like all the hallways too. They always look so good.”

“I’m most excited for the junior hallway. It’s really nice to get involved and see what they all turn out like. I’m excited to see all the different hallways too.”

“Loading up the trailers two nights before with all the props for the hallway. It’s a chance for me to work with my classmates and for us to come together as one to accomplish something.”
