It was a busy summer for journalism students as they attended four separate camps.

Students attended sessions on all areas of yearbook production and worked together to further develop the 2011 Pioneer yearbook concept and theme.

Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop
The University of Missouri, July 10-18

One of Hallam’s assignments was to write a piece on the history of the program:
At the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop, high school students from around the country work together with the guidance of professional journalists to produce stories, photos and broadcasts. MUJW is sponsored by the Dow Jones News Fund and takes place at the University of Missouri.
Northwestern University National High School Institute
June 27-July 30

This prestigious month-long program, established in 1931, is the nation’s oldest and largest university-based program for outstanding high school students. More than 500 students will enroll in the Institute’s six divisions: Debate, Film and Video Production, Journalism, Music, Speech and Theatre Arts. Students are affectionately called “Cherubs,” a tradition that began in the 1940s.

Each summer, an elite group of high school students are chosen from across the country for five days of intense instruction at Western Kentucky University’s nationally acclaimed photojournalism program. Tiara was one of 10 students selected to attend camp this summer.

Students attended several group newspaper lectures, ranging from basic reporting/interview skills to writing for the senses to ethics to writing for the web. A lot of time was spent in lab with our small groups and adviser.
Hallam earned a $500 scholarship to IU, and Salzman and Weber each received an award in the writing competition.
