Smooth sailing with smoothie selling

Mollie Lodde, junior, Kaleigh Bendoff, sophomore, and Audrey Scherr, freshman, participate in the advanced marketing Smoothie King promotion Wednesday, Sept. 20. Every year, advanced marketing hosts this benefit to support the Pioneer School of Business.

For the past seven years the pioneer school of business and Smoothie King have collaborated to promote the Smoothie King brand to the student body and let students experience the process of real-world business. During both lunches, the advanced marketing students hosted booths for students to win free sample smoothies on Wednesday, Sept. 20. This event not only benefits Smoothie King by advertising through the student body, but it also exposes business students to the reality of marketing.

“We mainly do this to help raise awareness to our brand in general and each year we do it, we see a huge spike in sales,” Jeremy Kubicek, Smoothie King owner, said. “We were just in the Greentree Parade this past weekend and all we heard was ‘I love you Smoothie King’ nonstop due to this great community.”

In preparation for this event, students were required to design games and a theme for each booth. The students brainstormed marketing ideas and brands in order to attract people to their station. Each of the stations held a variety of activities such as smoothie pong, sports trivia and bean bag tosses.

“As Smoothie King sells smoothies in the cafeteria, and also here locally, our objective is to make sales for them,” Bryce Bunton, business teacher said. “This year [the theme is] college rivalries, so you see lots of different college rivalries within the booths and tailgate games. Our goal is to create a fun atmosphere and brand that associates with Smoothie King.”

Students from all grades come together and support the pioneer business department by participating in their games to win smoothies. Many of the students including Grace Adams, sophomore, enjoyed fun and unique atmosphere it brings to marketing education.

“This event makes the whole school bond in a way where everyone’s having fun, getting competitive and enjoying the smoothies,” Adams said. “I remember this event last year, and when I heard they were doing this today, I was super excited because this is a fun event [that] kids from all grades can enjoy.”
