Jason Rekittke’s resignation from his position as head band director was announced in an email sent by Dr. Tom Williams, superintendent, yesterday, June 10. KHS is working to fill the now-open position according to Dr. Michael Havener, principal.
According to Havener, internal candidates–band teachers from KHS or the middle schools–are currently being reviewed to hold the job of head band director. The candidate will be officially chosen and recommended to the school board by Thursday, June 13, at the latest, and the school board will meet Monday and approve or deny the candidate. If approved, the candidate will hold the job of head band director under a one-year contract for the ‘13-’14 school year. Sometime during the school year, the position of permanent head band director will open for application, Havener said.
“Safety and security of students is the number one priority. In times like this, it’s important to respect everyone and make sure rumors don’t get out of control. We need to respect and protect everyone that’s involved,” Havener said. “We have counselors and administrators on campus for support. Please come to KHS if you need to talk. Please know that the school is always here.

Jason Rekittke has resigned from his position as head band director. An email sent to all KSD parents from Dr. Tom Williams, superintendent, said the resignation is due to an act of inappropriate conduct with a student, which happened several years ago. The incident is believed to be isolated, according to the email.
Rekittke taught at KHS for over 20 years. He has led the Pioneer Pride Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, the all-freshman Concert Band and the Wind Ensemble in his time at KHS.
According to ksdk.com, police say at this time there appears to be no crime committed.

Dear Kirkwood School District Families,
I am writing this e-mail to announce the resignation of Jason Rekittke, the band director for the Kirkwood School District. The resignation is due to an act of inappropriate conduct with a student, which happened several years ago. We believe this was an isolated incident.
Our first and most important mission is to provide the best education to help our students be successful. However, this cannot be accomplished without a safe and secure learning environment. While we cannot discuss the specifics of any personnel matter, please be assured that we have strict policies prohibiting inappropriate conduct toward students and we take immediate action upon receiving reports of any violation of those policies.
