Tentative plans for KHS return to on-campus learning

Dr. David Ulrich, KSD superintendent, announced the administration is planning a return for high school students during a Board of Education meeting Monday, Oct. 12. Ulrich said he would be meeting with Dr. Michael Havener, KHS principal, and his team to discuss engaging a return plan by Monday, Nov. 9. Information regarding a schedule and return coming from department meetings has been circulating in the KHS community.

Classroom layouts:

In every classroom, students must be a minimum of 3 feet apart and have assigned seats in each classroom. Teachers will have a camera set up to broadcast their lesson to students learning remotely. Students’ IPs will have very little flexibility. There will be a seating chart in the library, and students will not be able to walk around campus.

Hallway guidelines:

There will be no locker usage. Only one student will be allowed to leave their classroom at a time. Students cannot drink from the spout of drinking fountains, but will still be able to fill bottles with the water bottle filler. Students with low-risk symptoms sent to the nurse will be sent home.

Schedule outline:

The non-board approved schedule is currently laid out to have Monday through Thursday being an in-person learning environment, while Friday will be an online learning environment. On Mondays and Wednesdays, students will meet with their odd periods (1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th), while on Tuesdays and Thursdays students will meet with their even periods (2nd, 4th, 6th and homeroom). Along with this, KHS will dismiss students at 12:20 p.m. and then students will have until 1:40 p.m. for lunch and transportation from school to home. Grab and Go lunches will be available for all students free of charge. Students will then meet with two classes each day — virtually — from  1:45 p.m to 2:10 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. (for more detailed information on this, refer to schedule on the right). During those two hours it is up to the teachers’ discretion how they would like to fill that time; a check-in is required, but a check-out is not required.  All students are expected to attend these virtual classes.

Attendance and dismissal:

Attendance is mandatory and will be recorded on Infinite Campus. Students will be dismissed by building at 12:20 p.m. every day. After-school students who have to stay on campus will have pods they must be in during the virtual class periods. Non-athletic clubs and activities will not be allowed to meet after school until the second semester (excluding journalism, sports and performing arts). However, these activities can be held virtually.

Exams:

If in-person, final exams will take place from Dec. 17 until Dec. 22, with the last day including a makeup exam period and 7th hour final. Finals will take place in numerical order, with two finals per day.

Homeroom:

Students will not be allowed to travel or have any movement during homeroom. If wanting to meet with a teacher, students may Zoom with them. KHS is currently testing rooms to see if everyone can Zoom at the same time. Homeroom will also be used for some KHS activities such as digital citizenship presentations.

TKC will be following this story and give updates as information is released.
