Love through the ages

Love through the ages

February 13, 2016

With Valentine’s Day coming up, love is in the air. All around KSD, elementary schoolers are busy stapling lollipops onto their Spongebob Valentine’s Day cards while high schoolers scramble to make last-minute reservations for two. From Ms. Barnett’s kindergarten class and Ms. Kempter’s fourth grade class at North Glendale Elementary to a relationship right here at KHS, TKC took a closer look into what Valentine’s Day means to students in the district.

High School:

Jacqueline Miller, senior:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

“It’s nice to have a day where [Micah and I] can just focus on each other and our relationship, especially when life is so crazy and you have to focus on so many different things. Next year we won’t be together in the same state, so we have to make this year special.”

What do you think love is?

“For me, love is finding that person that makes you want to be a better person. When everything is going to trash, they are the person that makes you want to get up and keep going, and you’d basically do anything for that person.”

Kindergarten: Desirae Barnett, teacher

Isolde Scoville:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

“Celebrating love.”

Who do you love?

“Momma and Daddy and my cat.”

Are you going to give anyone a special Valentine?

“Mommy. I’m gonna give her a card with glued hearts.”

Abby Blicharz:

What do you think love is?

“Love is when you like a person that you want to marry.”

Do you have anyone like that?

“Mom and Dad.”

James Weitekamp & Finn McSwain:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

James: “Getting letters. [I give letters to] my friends. Finn is my best friend. We play kickball at recess [and we like] mathtime.”

What do you think love is?

Finn: “Caring about people.”

Fourth Grade: Amanda Kempter, teacher

Jane Roy:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

“Making things for my mom and dad to tell them how much I love them. I like making heart-flower crafts. I’m going to give cards to my best friends.”

Bennett Lasater:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

“My favorite part about Valentine’s Day is seeing the people you admire and love.”

Are you going to give a Valentine to anyone special?

“Yeah I’m gonna give [the girl I like] a heart that has an angel in it. We don’t really hang out, I just like her. I like how she’s kind and she’s nice and she’s smart.”

What do you think love is?

“I think the definition of love is to have great feelings for someone you like. You show love by being kind and when they drop their lunchbox you pick it up for them.”

Carson Vahl:

What’s your favorite part about Valentine’s Day?

“The parties. We pass out candy and make boxes and stuff.”

Are you going to give a Valentine to anyone special?

“Yeah, [this girl I like]. I like her because she’s funny, she’s athletic, she’s cute.”

What do you think love is?

“Well say you love someone–you’re probably gonna have to spend your whole life with them. So you aren’t just gonna get married and then get divorced right away. So you have to get to know them and care about them.”
