A flavor of fall

Maddie Meyers, features writer

Fall has arrived, and that means new festive desserts. TKC tried at least one fall treat from six different bakeries, and judged each on a scale of one to five pumpkins based off the criteria of flavor, texture and decoration.

Nathaniel Reid Bakery:
11243 Manchester Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon.-Sat. 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
The Amber-Caramel Pecan Tart: $5.95

The Amber-Caramel Pecan Tart has a delicious, creamy mix of flavors. The snap of the cookie crust with candied pecans layered and topped with a caramel mousse is a refreshing burst of caramel and pecan that complement each other perfectly. The gold flake on top also adds a lovely touch that brings the whole tart together. Even though this dessert is a little pricy, it is totally worth it. This fall treat earns high ratings because it meets all of the criteria and feels like a rewarding treat.

The Daily Bread:
11719 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO 63131
Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat. 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Iced Shortbread Coffee Cup Cookie: $2.89

The Iced Shortbread Coffee Cup Cookie has a creative coffee cup design with lovely iced decorations. This cookie satisfies one’s sweet tooth with a rich buttery taste and sugary frosting. The Daily Bread also has other beautifully designed shortbread cookies decorated as leaves and pumpkins. Each cookie can come in a package if you want to give it as a gift. Even though this cookie is gorgeously decorated, it lacks unique fall flavors such as pumpkin or cinnamon. It tasted just like an ordinary shortbread cookie would.

The Daily Bread:
11719 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO 63131
Mon.-Fri. 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat. 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
Leaf Sugar Cookie: $1.95

The Leaf Sugar Cookie is a very crisp, multicolored sugar-coated cookie. Each tiny detail of the cookie is perfect: especially the colorful layers that appear in the cookie when you take a bite. The cookie flawlessly resembles a rainbow of fall colors and leaves a sugary taste in your mouth that keeps you wanting more. This cookie lacks some special fall flavors, but it is still ravishing and scrumptious.

Bello’s Bakery:
11744 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO 63131
Mon.-Fri. 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Sat. 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Iced Sugar Cookie: $1.75 each

The Iced Sugar Cookies are simple yet remarkable. The icing is spread out in a thin glaze over the entire cookie, perfectly complementing the crunch underneath. The marble mix of colors on the leaf cookie and the sugar sprinkled on top of the pumpkin cookie are very appealing to the eye. You can count on Bello’s Bakery to provide a consistently delicious cookie; however, if you are looking for something more fall oriented, there are other desserts that are more fall distinctive.

Starbucks:
343 S Kirkwood Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon-Sat 5:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Sun. 6 a.m.-8 p.m.
Pumpkin Scone: $2.95

The pumpkin scone is similar to a cake with a gingerbread pumpkin taste. The frosting on the outside pairs well with the bread-like texture of the scone, and the yellow icing drizzle adds a marvelous design factor. This scone is filling and large enough to split with others. It has a strong pumpkin taste, but the design could be more fall-oriented, and the texture was a little too dense for my liking.

Starbucks:
343 S Kirkwood Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon-Sat 5:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Sun. 6 a.m.-8 p.m.
Hedgehog Cake Pop: $1.95

The hedgehog cake pop is small and adorable. This dessert is too little to share, but is the perfect size for one person. Covered in mini chocolate chips, the rich dark cocoa cake is an extreme burst of chocolate. While the design is cute, the flavor is no different from regular cake pops available any time of the year.

Kaldi’s Coffee:
120 S Kirkwood Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon-Sat 6 a.m.-10 p.m., Sun. 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Pumpkin Scone with Chai Buttercream: $2.79 (half price between 3-6 p.m.)

The pumpkin scone with chai buttercream is an exceptional combination of a dense pumpkin cake and a creamy frosting. Kaldi’s Coffee also re-heated the scone before plating it, which made it even better. The scone definitely could have a better fall decoration and its texture was a little stiff, but after heating it up, the scone softened and everything melted together creating a mouthwatering flavor. This dessert is also gluten-free for anyone with dietary restrictions.

McArthur’s Bakery:
210 N Kirkwood Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon-Sat 6 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun. 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Pumpkin Cheesecake: $3.99

The pumpkin cheesecake is a satisfying mix of cream cheese and pumpkin. The layers of the pumpkin crust, cheesecake and whipped cream cheese dollop on top combine together nicely. The design of the cake with the white chocolate piece on top is simple but elegant. I gave this dessert high marks because it is a triple threat with its gorgeous design, exquisite fall flavors and astonishing blend of textures.

McArthur’s Bakery:
210 N Kirkwood Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
Mon-Sat 6 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun. 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Apple Pie: $4.99

The apple pie has a firm crust with a soft apple filling that is very appetizing. The cinnamon sugar drizzled over the apple pieces goes well with the layered crust on top. This dessert might not be the most decorative but this miniature apple pie is a classic fall treat.
