Songs of the summer
August 15, 2019
Summer isn’t complete without an exceptional playlist. You’ll want to impress all of your pals when they finally hand you the aux, so don’t let them down. You could go the safe route and play an old summer classic such as “Call Me Maybe,” or take a risk by playing an indie band that “no one” has heard of. (Trust me, we’ve heard them, they aren’t all that). The point is, summer isn’t always going to be filled with trips to Europe or getting over 10 republishes on VSCO, so these songs need to be there for you through it all. As the first day of school approaches, I picked out some bops that everyone should have listened to these last few months. These songs were evaluated based on their lyrics, rhythms and how well they fit with this summer’s vibe. So sit back, put your airpods in and enjoy the songs of the summer.
Khalid has done it again. No matter how many times “Talk” is played, it doesn’t get old. Despite everyone’s best efforts, toes will tap and arms will swing as you swoon over his angelic voice. Everything about this song screams summer. Once school gets out, everyone wants their time off to be fun and casual. People don’t want to have a complicated summer; it’s not that deep. Khalid’s lyrics definitely play into the casual vibe listeners are looking for. While the words he’s singing are fairly serious, he takes a relaxed approach when singing. He takes his time hitting all the right notes, plus, the tempo is the perfect pace for all summer activities, whether that be an enjoyable trip to the pool or a relaxing drive with the windows down.
Any Lizzo song will have you on your feet in no time. “Boys,” in particular, took social media by storm this summer. There were Tik Toks. There were IG videos. The whole world seemed to be streaming this song and we can see why. Lizzo excels at hyping her listeners up by making them feel confident. It’s the perfect song to sing into your hairbrush when no one is watching, so belt out those lyrics the next time you’re home alone.
3. Señorita-Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes
Once you’ve seen the music video for Señorita, you won’t be able to stop listening. If you don’t ship Camilla and Shawn once you’ve watched them salsa together, I’m sorry, but did you even watch the video? The simplistic guitar riffs in the background with the singers’ harmonies made this song an instant hit. This track will grow on you, so if you cringed during the first listen, play it again and you might just change your mind.
4. Sucker-Jonas Brothers
Even though this song came out in March, it’s still in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100. The Jonas Brothers comeback was exactly what this summer needed. “Sucker” can be played at any pool party, on any road trip and during any hangout. You won’t have to read between the lines to see the meaning behind this one, which makes it simple and fun. The beat accompanying the brothers’ outstanding vocals makes this song perfect for any season, especially the summer.
5. Panini-Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X continues to make mindless music that somehow becomes popular for long periods of time. While Old Town Road has been at number one for 15 weeks, it should not be on your summer playlist and that’s the tea. It’s overplayed, overrated, and overdone. We don’t want another remix… one was too many. Panini is slightly better than Old Town Road and isn’t as annoying. It’s a silly song you can throw on at any time and you will catch yourself knowing the lyrics despite barely having listened to it.
