“Gun violence is something I really worry about a lot. It’s getting easier to get even stronger guns and rifles. They’re making the bullets more deadly and more dangerous. I while I haven’t been personally affected by it, but I just feel for everyone who has. Just look at the top story in the paper today. A woman was struck by a stray bullet in her own home. These things have unintended consequences. And I think it’s getting worse. When it’s three of four stories like this a day, it’s definitely getting worse.” -Anonymous

“I think our role is to provide services. Part of the reason I do what I do is partly related to my belief in democracy. So one of our goals and one our roles it to help rebuild trust in democracy. We are able to affect people’s lives. If you want a stop sign in your neighborhood, if someone isn’t taking their trash out at the right time, if they’re not trimming their hedges so you can’t make a turn in your car-that’s local government in action. With federal government, you don’t see that. And because local government has such an effect on people’s lives, we have an opportunity to rebuild trust in democracy. That’s a great motivation for coming to work every day.” -Beth Van Doren, Public Relations representative for the City of Kirkwood
