LIFE of a Pioneer: first high school relationship

From the first day of freshman year to graduation, students pass through milestone events to mark their ways through the treacherous journey that is high school. Here are some of the most common.

Movies and television shows can publicize high school relationships as a common part of every student’s life. However, those going through their first high school relationship may consider this a milestone in their lives because they learn to manage school life and their special someone. Claire Johnson and Sam Hooks, juniors, said they have been able to do this since they began dating seven months ago.

“It’s been a positive experience in the fact that I’ve gotten to know someone on a more personal level, and it’s been fun being in a relationship with him,” Johnson said.

Some students may worry about balancing their time spent with friends and their boyfriend/girlfriend in high school. However, ever since they first began dating this past summer Johnson and Hooks both agree they successfully find time for each other as well as their friends.

“There are times that I’ve had to give up time with him to hang out with my friends and vice versa, but overall it’s not really a problem,” Johnson said.

After being in their first high school relationship, Johnson and Hooks give advice to those who are in the same position.

“If you’re not really sure whether or not it’s a good idea to ask somebody out, I would say wait for a while,” Hooks said. “Take a lot of time to make sure you’re with somebody who is going to make you happy and [that] you’ll be able to make them happy.”

Overall, Johnson and Hooks said they have successfully balanced their education and relationship. Hooks said he appreciates having someone special out there who cares about him, too.

“[My favorite part is] knowing there’s somebody out there who loves me as much as I love them and makes me happy and knows what I want, and knowing that I’m also there to do that for them,” Hooks said.
