When KHS won the 2013 Turkey Day game it was not only a celebration for the community of Kirkwood, but also for a pair of brothers who had just finished playing their last football game together. Out on the bright green turf field, Amonte and Amon Mason said these moments have been their favorite times throughout high school.

Amonte, junior, and Amon, senior, began playing football together about ten years ago, and have always been on the same team. Amonte said they helped each other become better athletes.

“We’re so accustomed to being around each other and we basically push each other to go harder and [to] work harder,” Amon said.

Throughout their time at KHS, Amonte said one of his favorite memories with his older brother was having him as his captain this past season.

“I felt happy for him because he has been working really hard and it paid off,” Amonte said.

The brothers also strive to be the best they can off the field. Amonte said he enjoys going to school with Amon because he helps keep him on the right track.

“There was a time when I really didn’t want to to do any type of work because I was tired of school,” Amonte said. “[Amon] helped me get through it because he said if I don’t get through this then I probably won’t be playing football. It helped because it got me back on the right track and I ended up getting all my grades right so I could play.”

In addition to seeing his brother learn to excel at football, Amon said he loves watching his brother grow up in the classroom and the basketball court.

“I’ve always wanted the best for him,” Amon said. “He has gotten a lot more mature and he’s a really good athlete and going to be very successful. I want to see him be successful and not go down the wrong path. It’s very humbling to see him grow up to be a successful young man.”

When Amon graduates this spring, Amonte said he will miss the jokes his brother tells him throughout the school day to make him laugh. Nevertheless, once these brothers split up to go to college they will still have their favorite high school memories together to cherish.

“I wouldn’t want to have anyone else involved in my sports activities and my high school career than him,” Amon said. “I wouldn’t change anything about it.”
