Senior Profile: Paulina Pennanen

She came 4,678 miles from her hometown of Espoo, Finland. She arrived without knowing a single soul, without being fluent in English, but knowing she wanted to leave Finland for a year to be an American high schooler.

“I think when you’re a teenager, it’s the best time to experience new things,” Paulina said.

Paulina Pennanen arrived in Kirkwood last summer as part of an exchange program with CETUSA (Council for Educational Travel, USA). Not only did Paulina have to brace herself for a new lifestyle, but she also had to prepare for the hardships separation might bring. She said the distance was difficult to overcome at first, but not as hard as she expected.

“It feels weird because [your friends are] continuing their lives in Finland and you’re building up a new life. It’s like you’re not a part of their life for a year,” Paulina said.

Paulina said her favorite aspect of America was feeling like she was a member of KHS.

“Actually feeling a part of something, like the senior class, [has been my favorite thing],” Paulina said. “There’s more school spirit here so [everyone is] closer [than at my school]. The senior hallway decorating was also really fun, and all of the sporting events and just because it’s here. I’m not going to experience the same in Finland.”

When she returns to her high school in Finland, Paulina will have to take two more years of high school because this year does not count for her school, Mattlidens Gymnasium. In Finland, she had just completed her sophomore year. By taking this year at KHS, Paulina will still have to go through 11th and 12th grade before graduating.

Not only will the friends and memories Paulina created in America stick with her for life, but also how she found herself during her time spent here will also leave a lasting impact.

“I have learned a lot about myself and become a lot more independent,” Paulina said. “I know when I have to ask for help, and I know I can do stuff. I’m strong and I can do it.”

Although she is sad to see her time in America coming to a close mid-June, Paulina said this will not be the last time she sees Kirkwood.

“Watch for me because I’m coming back. I don’t know when, but I’ll be back,” Paulina said.
