Senior softball pitcher Haley Thogmartin had one of the most stellar performances that will occur in KHS sports all year on Monday, Aug. 25 in the season opener against Lindbergh, in which Kirkwood won 5-2.

Thogmartin opened the game with a three run inside the park home run that got the Pioneers off to an early lead.  She contributed in another at-bat with a single into the gap in the outfield.  Thogmartin not only crushed the Flyers with her bat, but she also shut them down from the rubber.  Her lockdown performance was highlighted by 16 strikeouts en route to being credited with a win.

“I would definitely say it was one of her more exemplary performances,” Amy Leatherberry, varsity head coach, said.

The Pioneers’ softball team hopes this was the first of many outstanding games from their senior captain.  According to Leatherberry, her outgoing personality and team-first attitude has allowed her to bond with her teammates and become one of the team’s vital players.

“She is definitely a competitor, and she’s one of our leaders on our team,” Leatherberry said.

Thogmartin’s highly competitive attitude helped earn her 2013 All-Conference and All-District honors.  She nearly led the St. Louis area with 148 strikeouts.  Her goals for 2014 are to make the All-Region team, which includes all of the St. Louis area, and more importantly, to lead her team to a district championship.

“She’s very good at motivating the girls, and I think that she inspires them with her performances because she is so dominant,” Leatherberry said.
