Mary Ralston and Audrey Berns March 4, 2017

Audrey Berns Chris Moritz What’s your favorite part about working [at Sammy Soaps]? “My favorite part is that we get to meet all of the customers, and you get to come back here and see everything.” “Sam...

Joe Fisch, 9th grade counselor: “I was a teacher before I was a counselor and one thing that drew me to [being a counselor] was getting to work with students in a one on one setting, getting to know the students and helping them in a little bit of a different [way] than with teaching. Don’t get me wrong, teachers have a major impact on students but sometimes you get to get into some issues or topics that are very impactful to the students.”

Cynthia Casserly, Police Officer

“I’ve always wanted to be a police officer ever since I was a kid. I finally realized that I need to make my dream come true, and that’s when I got hired at Kirkwood. [I like] the diversity of Kirkwood. We have a little bit of everything from all walks of life. That’s what makes it so interesting.”

TKC: What is your proudest moment or accomplishment you’ve had with your job?
“My proudest moment was [when] I had a young lady involved in heroine. Her parents were having a lot of trouble and she was obviously having a lot of trouble. I talked to [the young lady] at length. Then not until about a month later I saw the mother on the street and she actually hugged me and thanked me. Her daughter had gone to treatment. She was getting a job and starting to turn her life around. That’s why I do what I do. But a lot of times, we don’t get the closure. With the calls like that, we don’t always know what happens [in the end]. We don’t [always] know if we’ve had any impact.”

TKC: Do you have any advice for anyone interested in law enforcement?
“[My advice] is to finish schooling and get a college degree. More doors are open that way. Have a love for it, be able to talk to people, and don’t have any criminal history at all.”

VOK: office assistant and cadet

TKC interviewed Ricky Maddock and Zoë Powell, juniors, to figure out the most interesting things they get to do as an office assistant and a student cadet. TKC: What do you do as an office assistant? Maddock:...

Julie Healey, KHS librarian, listens to classic rock, current pop R&B from the 60s and 70s and bluegrass music. Her favorite artists range from The Who to Prince to Willie Nelson. Healey believes most students listen to hip-hop at KHS. I think that schools have to be careful about language, about innapropriate language, Healy said. I know innapropriate sounds like such a fuddyduddy word, but schools have to take into account what happens when people are offended. I think when you are in any public entity, especially one thats paid for by tax money you do have to take into account not offending people. Christmas music is going to go in that same category. To me, it could be offensive to play Christmas music and I personally would not choose to.

Catherine Wright, sophomore, inspects her glider before launch. Wright chose Aerospace Engineering while flipping through the course description book because she loves learning about planes. “My favorite part of the class is getting to make your own plane, instead of having to test ones that other people have made,” Wright said. “[I love that] each plane is unique.”

Students in Aerospace Engineering ended their five-week airplane design unit with a flight competition Dec. 12. Taught by John Mackin, science teacher, each student started designing their gliders...

Jai Thornhill, Senior. When talking about what good qualities the candidates had, Jai said, “I don’t think Trump is the perfect candidate either, [he] definitely has a lot of faults. But, at least he’s upfront and open about it. Hillary’s got a lot of baggage that we don’t even know. He’s just like “I’m an idiot. Like me for it or don’t.” He doesn’t care. He says exactly what he thinks, not sugar coating it, beating around the bush. Straight forward.”
