12 months of Christmas

12 months of Christmas

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I love everything about it, from the classic scents of cinnamon, peppermint and pine to the catchy Christmas carols I’ve listened to all my life. But because Christmas is such a priceless time many wear out the holiday spirit before it even arrives.

When Christmas music begins playing in November it takes away from the excitement of Christmas time I look forward to all year long. I don’t want to listen to Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree when my Christmas tree hasn’t even been chopped down yet. I don’t want to observe my neighbors in shorts putting up Christmas lights in September.  I don’t want to watch Frosty the Snowman when it’s 72 degrees outside with no chance of snow. And I don’t want to see Christmas decorations in Target before Thanksgiving has even begun.

Here at Kirkwood 21 percent (89/415) of students start celebrating Christmas in November. If I started listening to Christmas music in early November, I would be so sick of it by Christmas I wouldn’t even want to listen to it on the day it was meant for. I also love Thanksgiving, but with the Christmas season right around the corner, the holiday lacks the proper celebration it deserves. Thanksgiving is definitely worthy of our attention and it’s the last time to celebrate the fall season before the stress of Christmas shopping and finals kick in. And for those of you who like the premature buzz of the holidays, maybe take into consideration that not all of us want to be blinded by your twinkling home before December.

Even though many won’t, I’ll hold off on the jolly songs and inflatable Santas until after Thanksgiving when Christmas cheer is in full swing, and it’s finally time to celebrate.
