99 prom-blems

Can I just come out and say what we are all thinking? Prom sucks.

No, I have not actually attended prom. And in no way am I “anti-prom.” But so far, it does not seem as great as all the movies make it out to be.

I think the stress of prom has actually started to grey my hair. Finding a dress that is somewhere between “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Grandmother of the Bride”, a date and shoes. Scheduling a hair, nail and spray tan appointment. Planning a pre-prom and post-prom party. And asking someone in a somewhat cute, original way. Not to mention the whopping expenses.

Now before you shake your head at my petty “prom-blems” let me finish.

Last week I found myself standing in my bedroom with four long prom dresses laying on my bed thinking “Which dress would other people like best?” And that is where I stopped myself and reevaluated my mindset.

Why does it matter what other people think of my dress? I get it, we are girls and have a tendency to think a lot about what others think of us. But after all, that is a whole lot of pressure for only one night.

While I do want to look my best and have a good time, it comforts me to remember that in a mere two years, when I, as well as my classmates have moved on to bigger and better things, April 26, 2014 will be left in the past, Along with some other high school memories I would prefer stay in the past. Way in the past.

So let’s all take a deep breath, drop the stress and put prom into perspective. Because who really cares what shade of coral best brings out your eyes? Go with people who you will have fun with, and do not over-stress.

Prom is supposed to be fun, so pick the dress that you like best.
