Clubs Uncovered: K-Word

February 2, 2015

K-Word, KHS’s slam poetry team, meets every Thursday in Mr. Pioter’s room. There they write poetry, edit each other’s poems and share them. They draw inspiration from each other as well as their own feelings.

“The main people who inspire me are Veronica Wiedl and Anna Pruitt,” Brittane Curry, sophomore, said. “We’ve done group pieces together and their work plus my work just functions well together.”

The team works toward a competition where there are four rounds. In 2014, K-Word attended two poetry slam competitions. At their first competition, students performed solo pieces, while at the second, students performed group pieces. Their performance is scored out of 30 and Curry scored a 29.5.

K-Word is open to any new members, experienced or not.

“Bring what you got and don’t be nervous,” Curry said. “It will be the best thing you’ll ever do.”
