Changes For 2014-15 School Year

All students should expect to wear IDs next year and see card readers on some doors as well as a new location and redesign of ATLAS and journalism (SJ) buildings.

“Once we finish out the year, we meet as a team of administrators and certain staff members and look at possibilities of making Kirkwood High School more efficient, safer, and overall better for students and staff,” Dr. Michael Havener, principal said.

Safety precautions will be increased and students can expect to see more card readers on doors, and the same doors locked this year will be locked next year.

“We can also expect to see more occurrences of Dingo [the drug dog], on campus next year, this year was the pilot testing,” Havener said. “Students can also expect the stadium renovations to be finished, and to wear ID’s on their necks.”

Sean McCarthy, English teacher approves of the idea and said that he understands the need for security.

“We have a beautiful campus, and I like the idea of walking outside, so I’m fine with card readers as long as they provide people with access who should have access [to KHS],” McCarthy said.

Other people such as Dontez Lillard, Freshman, believe that the ID system is unnecessary and that people will not wear them anyways. Lillard believes that the school needs to come up with a creative way to encourage students to wear their IDs.

Kirkwood High School will also become a construction ground for the next year with the building of the Walker Natatorium.

“At the beginning of school in August, the construction will be beginning, but not anywhere close to finishing,” said Havener.

The administrative team at KHS has still not had their annual meeting, and nothing is final. “Nothing has been decided yet,” said Havener, “it’s still too early to tell.”
