Wade’s transition to freshmen class

Building relationships with 400 students in a span of four years may be tough, but Mike Wade, senior principal, dealt with this exciting challenge with the class of 2014. Having seniors getting ready to go off to college, Wade prepares for the incoming freshmen, and the freshmen get ready to form a relationship with their new principal.

“[I’ve heard from other students] that Mr. Wade is really relatable, friendly and welcoming,” Hannah Battista, 8th grader at NKMS, said.

Wade not only takes the time to build relationships with his new students, but he also makes sure everyone is comfortable and having a good time, Kweli Shotwell, senior, said. Wade cares about his class and wants the best for them.

“Mr. Wade takes real interest in our class. He always tries to get to know everybody, he’s really uplifting and you can just tell that he really cares about everyone,” Shotwell said.

Though Wade takes the time to get to know his students and have fun with them, the transition from seniors leaving to new freshmen coming is not always the easiest.

“The kids are transitioning right now. It’s just a real balance making sure they get the attention they deserve,” Wade said.

While going through the transition, the eighth graders prepare and the seniors try not to forget the great memories they have had with Wade. As the seniors grow closer and closer to the last day of school, they realize how close they are to the end of their high school career.

“Junior year, during hallway decorations, our theme was Toy Story. Mr. Wade came down in a Buzz Lightyear costume and a pink wig, and it was the funniest thing,” Shotwell said. “I probably laughed for ten minutes straight.”

Wade said the 2014 class is a great class that has really done a lot for Kirkwood, and it is going to be hard to see them go. Wade has to make the transition soon, with the school year being almost over, but he is prepared.

“[I enjoy] building relationships and being around the students for four years and really getting to know them,” Wade said. “This has been a great class. They have really done a lot for our school and have made a great impression in a positive way.”
