“One thing I love about working [at the library] is talking to people about things I love, and that means books. I love talking to people, just expressing my own opinions about books I love and seeing how others feel about books they love. I also love Sunday mornings when there’s just no one here and everything is so peaceful; there’s a real contentment to the quiet here. Most of all I’d say the library is a common space in Kirkwood, it’s really one of the only places people can come and not have to buy anything, not have to be anyone. It’s really a place where you can come and be anything you want.”

-Heather Arnold, Kirkwood Public Library

“I think the most important thing during the holidays is family. You have to see them, you have to hang out with them, you have to make sure they’re alright. When I came [to America] I didn’t really see my uncles, I only really saw my mom and my dad and my brother. It felt pretty lonely, but at the same time we made some friends. Wherever you go, you can make a new family.”

– Xorge Hernandez, Senior

TKC: “What is the biggest thing that you have learned from your travels around the world?”

“I hate stereotypes. I hate them. People ask if I look at the negative. I say no. These are genuinely nice people who are going about their lives and are so very gracious. I take away a feeling of good things about the world, not bad things.”

-Linda Lindsey, Washington University professor
