The Kirkwood Call

All our sons so bold

For many residents and students, the alma mater “Hail Kirkwood” brings feelings of tradition and pride. To others, it reinforces the sexism still existing today. Mike Wade, freshman class principal, has received emails from concerned parents of students who feel the lyric “through all the ages, all our sons so bold” is sexist and offensive to the female students and residents of Kirkwood.

“It’s easy for me to say it is a tradition, but as a father I can appreciate how some people would want a change,” Wade said.

In order to allow the students to be the ones to make the choice of whether or not to change the lyrics to the song, the STUCO members discussed the issue.

According to Kelsey Landrum, sophomore and STUCO member, the majority of the representatives were not passionate about the issue. However, they do plan to alert the student body to the possibility of a change, by word of mouth and also through a poll offered on thekirkwoodcall.com. As of Oct 18, 80 percent of 135 students believe that the song should remain the same, while 20 percent believe it should become “all our ones.”

“Changing it really doesn’t matter, because it has been a tradition for a long time and there are bigger fish to fry,” Landrum said.

While nothing official has been decided, the line could be changed to “through all the ages, all our ones so bold” to please all genders at the school. According to Wade, the issue will be further discussed at the next STUCO meeting, but the date has yet to be announced.

I don’t think its sexist and I do think the song should stay the same. Isn’t tradition what this school is all about anyways? But for someone to sit there and say that the song is just about the football team because we really only sing it at football games is completely wrong. Just because the song says “all our SONS so bold” it doesn’t mean “all our GUYS on the football team so bold” it means everyone is bold with everything they do. Whether its school, sports, choir, drama or art!

Saying “sons” is the same thing as saying “man” when talking about our race. Its not reinforcing that women shouldn’t be allowed in our school, its just a word. Let it go.

I think its a weird song and shouldn’t be our school song cause not everyone can remember it. I don’t think it is sexist i just think it beholds a meaning beyond anyone’s thinking. If we want to kirkwood to be this school of greatness, i believe it should have a song of greatness and more thought.

I believe the song is speaking of our football team, who are primarily males minus the rare occasion of a female kicker. SO I think it would be rude to change it …
