Most students know the struggles of facing school, activities and homework every week, but for some students there is an extra load added. Kacy Jacobs, junior, and Lucy Rau, freshman, shared some of the positive and negative effects of playing a KHS and club sport during the same season.
Q: What sports do you play in one season?
KJ: I play select soccer and field hockey.
LR: I play volleyball for school and club soccer.
Q: What’s the hardest part of playing both?
KJ: I literally have no time to finish homework and there’s no time to relax.
LR: It’s hard to keep up with schoolwork because sometimes I don’t get home until ten.
Q: Do you think girls that play club are the standouts of the teams?
KJ: I think they have a step up during preseason from playing all year, but I don’t think they have to play club to be good.
LR: I wouldn’t say that because girls who don’t play club are good and it doesn’t really set them apart.
Q: What do your parents think about playing both?
KJ: They’re fine with it and they’re not about to make me choose between soccer and field hockey.
LR: They’re really supportive but it’s just as hard for them because they have to drive everywhere.
Q: What’s the upside of playing both?
KJ: It keeps you in shape and keeps your skills up all year and I love playing with all my friends.
LR: I love the volleyball girls, and I’m kept busy; I like staying busy.
Both girls are hoping to play soccer in college and will continue to play sports for KHS. Other students also share their interests in school sports as student athletes of the weeks.
