What’s next for the Rams?

St. Louis Rams starting quarterback, Sam Bradford, was injured in a preseason game Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. The former first overall pick out of Oklahoma tore his left ACL, causing him to miss the entire 2014 NFL season. It was the same injury Bradford suffered last year against the Carolina Panthers in week 7. According to Rams head coach Jeff Fisher, there is currently no timetable set for Bradford’s operation.

The Rams move forward with 12-year veteran Shaun Hill as their man under center, whose last start was in 2010 with the Detroit Lions. While he lacks Bradford’s high ceiling, Hill is a perfect fit for the Rams, a team that focuses on running the ball effectively and playing stellar defense.

“Shaun’s our guy,” Fisher said, according to ESPN. “We’ve brought him here, he’s got experience, we’ve got all the confidence in the world in him.”

With Bradford’s absence, look for the Rams to increase running back Zac Stacy’s carries. Last season, Stacy racked up 973 yards on the ground, which was second among rookies only to Eddie Lacy. The Rams also feature a superb pass rush duo in Chris Long and Robert Quinn. Defense alone could be enough to keep the team competitive, even in the NFC West.

While Bradford has shown flashes of greatness over the course of his career, including Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, the Rams cannot afford to stick with him as the long-term option due to his injury history. Rather than looking at unproven starters like Mark Sanchez, they need to invest in young talent. Several high-profile quarterback prospects, including Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, will take center-stage this college football season.

In any case, the Rams will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Bradford’s progress over the next 12 months. While the Rams wait for their quarterback of the future, here’s hoping defense wins football games.
