With most students coming home starving after a dreadful seven hours of school, The Kirkwood Call has gathered a list of the quickest, easiest and healthiest recipes to leave you full and energized till dinner.

1. Strawberry Banana Smoothie
What you need:
– 1 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
– 1 cup frozen strawberries**
– 1 frozen banana, cut into small pieces**
– ¼ cup orange juice

Put yogurt, strawberries, banana, and juice into blender. Purée until smooth. Makes one 20 ounce smoothie.

** Strawberries and banana can be substituted for 1 cup of any other frozen fruit. Such as: raspberries, peach, pineapple, blueberries or mango.

 

2. Pita and Hummus
What you need:
– 2 mini whole wheat pitas
– 3 tablespoons hummus (can be bought at any grocery store or homemade here http://allrecipes.com/recipe/real-hummus )
– Carrots and/or celery (optional)

Toast pitas in a toaster on medium heat. Spread hummus on pita or cut up pita and dip into hummus. Carrots and celery can also be dipped in hummus.

3.  Ants on a log
What you need:
– 2 stalks celery
– ¼ cup peanut butter
– 1-2 tablespoons raisins

Wash celery and cut the ends off. Spread peanut butter on inside of celery. Sprinkle raisins on peanut butter.

 

4. Banana bites
What you need
– 1 large banana
– 3-4 teaspoons peanut butter
– ½ cup cereal of choice (recommended: Special K, Cheerios or Rice Krispies)

Slice banana into one inch bites. Spread 1/2 teaspoon peanut butter onto the top of each banana bite. Dip the top of the banana into the cereal of choice, covering the peanut butter with cereal. Insert a toothpick through the top of each bite for easy eating.

 

5. Mini english muffin pizzas
What you need
– 1 english muffin, cut in half
– 2 tablespoons tomato sauce
– ¼ – ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
– Additional toppings of choice

Preheat oven to 400º. Spread 1 tablespoon tomato sauce on each half english muffin. Sprinkle ⅛ – ¼ cup cheese on each half. Add additional toppings. Bake 5-10 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden brown. Alternatively microwave muffin halves 1-2 minutes on high power.
