Sibling Rivalry: Eric and Matt Eagon

Matt and Eric Eagon are brothers who share a fondness for each other and a strongly anchored relationship. Whether the boys are at school, on the ice rink playing hockey or debating at home they said they will always remain close.

The brothers were born a year apart, Eric a sophomore and Matt a junior. At school they tend to keep to themselves because they have their own friends and classes to attend. However if they see each other in the halls, Matt said they will stop and talk to each other.

“We kind of stick to our own devices,” Matt said. “He has his group of friends and I have mine. I see him a couple times throughout the day but that’s about it.”

Despite their closeness, they often find aspects in each other that they do not find particularly admirable.

“[Eric is] sometimes annoying,” Matt said, “because he constantly antagonizes me at home about really stupid stuff.”

Like most brothers, they argue over things that are silly and certainly ones that do not mean much. Eric said they always get over the dispute, forgive each other and move on.

“I think one of our last arguments was why people sleep,” Matt said. “[Eric] was talking about sleep being used to build muscles, because it was after a workout. But I told him he was wrong, like always, and that it was to rest the brain. Anyways we consulted with our parents since they’re both in the medical field and they verified my argument.”

According to Matt, when they play varsity hockey together they compete as well as they can, trying to have a better overall game than the other brother. Although the boys play separate positions, Matt a goalie and Eric playing a defensive position, they try to play their best individual game possible and push themselves even harder as they would with their other teammates. Matt said this rivalry makes them better players in the end.

“It’s fun to play on the same team,” Eric said. “But it’s more fun to play against him.”
