There will be blood: science class stain the sidewalks

Students racing to class this past week might have slowed between the science and English buildings as they noticed strange red splotches on the sidewalks.

These dark-red stains are not from blood, as many believed, but from the fake blood Biotechnical Engineering students used to analyze blood spatter. The classes are studying cause and directionality and the fake blood used in the experiments dried much darker than expected.

The fake blood made its way onto the sidewalks as lab groups studied the drip patterns of hypothetical victims standing in place, walking and running. Students also tested the difference of blood falling on snow and concrete. All these experiments are part of a Forensic Investigation unit.

“As they say,” Mandy Melton, science teacher, said. “Blood is thicker than water.”
