Protesting without words

Protesting without words

The halls of Kirkwood were unusually quiet Friday April 15, as students participated in the silent protest against homosexual discrimination known as the Day of Silence.

“The day of silence is about remembering those people harassed, harmed or murdered for being L.B.G.T.Q. (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transvestite and/or Questioning) and are permanently silent today,” Sharon Taysi, sponsor of the event and of Kirkwood High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance, said.

Signs and tags reading “I support the day of silence” were distributed in the commons to any student or teacher wishing to participate before school. Participating students hope this event leads to the end of discrimination based on sexual preference.
