Ranking KHS spring sports

Roaring crowds, full stands, Pep Nation and anticipated games; all things spring sports lack. Where did spring sports go wrong? Instead of student sections, their stands are full of parents and the occasional supportive friend. Here are the “best of the worst” spring sports at KHS.

There aren’t many good spring sports, but despite all of its coaching problems, Girls Soccer is a classic. Holland Hilgendorf

8: Coming in last place is water polo. I don’t have much to say on this one because I didn’t know it was a sport until two years ago. Though I do have respect for the athletes, I can only tread water for five minutes.

7: Next is Boys Volleyball. You probably have heard your whole life “you’re so tall, why not play basketball,” and I agree. Boys volleyball is often forgotten about and overlooked, so seven is a fair spot.

6: In sixth place is Girls Lacrosse. The 1-12 Girls varsity record last year pretty much explains itself. However, there is room for improvement.

5: Boys Lacrosse could boost this ranking but they aren’t even technically a KHS sport, just a Kirkwood club. Instead of Serena Williams isn’t very appealing to me. Plus, you have to drive to the matches. If we had tennis courts on campus, tennis would probably rank higher.

4: Just missing the podium is Boys Golf. While I am not a golf person besides the occasional Top Golf visit, it is better to watch than some of the other spring sports. Though it is more of something to enjoy at the country club than a watchable sport.

3: Taking the bronze is Boys Baseball. Maybe it would be ranked higher if they had a turf field and didn’t get every other game canceled. Other than that and the fact the games are way too long, I don’t see anything else wrong with it.

2: Winning the silver medal, Boys and Girls Track and Field. Although the meets are a little long and running in circles can be boring, Track and Field is entertaining in some events and a very athletic sport.

1: Girls Soccer gets gold. There aren’t many good spring sports, but despite all of its coaching problems, Girls Soccer is a classic.
