Tuesday night, Dec. 10, the Kirkwood Board of Education met in the ASC building at North Middle School to vote on several different projects for the coming 2013 new year.
After several statements from citizens of Kirkwood both supporting and also rejecting the project, the board came to a majority vote to pass it.
According to Mike Romay, member of the board, the Stadium Project is expected to cost between $2.4-2.8 million dollars. It will be paid for through Kirkwood’s Maintenance Fund and also some private funds as well.
The intent is to repair and up-date the facilities to make them safer and have ADA approval. Romay said the stadium seating currently does not pass handicap regulations, the safety rails on top of the press box are 14 inches too short, several brackets have been set in place to support the bleachers, and certain parts of the stadium have been reported to be 50 years old.
Dr. Williams, district superintendent, said the new stadium is a necessity for the safety of the students as well as the community.
The project is intended to start once the 2012-2013 school year is over, and be complete in time for school sports that fall.
More meetings will be held to discuss the details of this project before commencement.
