Donning a grass skirt, Alexander Kühl, German American Partnership Program (GAPP) student, ran onto Keating stage to begin performing the highlights of the GAPP talent show.
“My friends found the song on the Internet and we thought it would be funny to dance to. I decided I would do it, but only if I could wear a coconut bra,” Kühl said. “It was the best part of the show, because it was pure comedy.”
The talent show was only a small part of GAPP. The German students attended KHS for three weeks and did activities such as visit the St. Louis Gateway Arch, take a weekend trip to Memphis, TN and attend a KHS football game.
“We did a bunch of activities in our short time with the Germans,” John Fuszner, junior, said. “It was cool to show the Germans how we tailgate before football games, the game itself and some good old American culture. And throughout GAPP, I feel like me and my partner became brothers. We will always be in contact in the future, as well as me and some of the other Germans on the trip.”
Although they were only able to spend a few weeks in the United States, GAPPers on both the German and American sides made connections that will last a lifetime.
“It’s so funny you can find another family in another country, but it is a real family,” Esra Schwirz, GAPP student, said.
