Ellipsis literary magazine

KHS’s Ellipsis literary magazine plans on releasing its publication in the next three weeks despite financial ailments. The club compiles submissions gathered from students, publishing collections of their creative work.

“We get poems, short stories, even raps,” Lesley Sexton, club president, said.
Prior to the magazine’s release, the club requests students submit their work, which is filtered by the club’s members into a manageably sized product, according to Sexton.

During the compilation process, members support or reject a potential entry by assigning a color value: green, yellow or red. Afterwards, each member explains their reasoning for their choice as the club collectively deliberates on the composition of the magazine.

Circumstances have shifted many of these discussions in innovative directions as the group searches for new ways to deal with everyday challenges.

This year has not been without change for Ellipsis. The club released their first “mini-mag” Feb. 18, 2014. The mini-mag contains less material than magazines released in the past, leaving out the artwork found in previous compilations. This smaller publication is intended to promote publicity for the club, which seeks a larger volume of poems, stories and artwork for the upcoming, full-size magazine.

“Earlier we published a mini-mag, and that’s a way to get our name out there,” Rachel Fechter, managing editor, said.

In addition, Ellipsis has dealt with issues of funding. Their upcoming full-size magazine has been shortened due to financial pressure.

“This is kind of negative, but a change has been that the big mags this year, we’ve had to downsize because we’ve lost funding,” Fechter said.

Ellipsis’ leadership hopes to relieve this economic stress by decreasing the cost of producing the magazines. The club’s management hopes to use lessened expenditure and the publicity garnered by the “mini-mag” to revitalize the literary publication.
