Style of summer

The sticky days of summer may have winded to an end, but the trends that have developed over those few months are far from over. From flowy fabrics to romantic rosettes, trends evolving to fit the warm weather showed a more care-free side of fashion, both on and off the runway. Here are the top five fashion fads this summer.

Metallics

Despite the convention of pastels or tamer colors that become in style over spring, this summer brought harsh metallic colors. From accessories to shoes and even dresses, silver and gold metallics have become mainstream, and can most likely be found in our closets. Initially beginning with the creation of a metallic version of the Adidas Samba, the trend quickly caught on and breached the boundaries of shoes, branching out to pants and bodysuits. Universal to all the seasons, I’m sure a metallic sheen will continue to blind you for months to come.

Rosettes

Perhaps the most random trend of this summer: the rosette. Sported by everyone’s favorite it-girl Sofia Richie, they can be seen attached to belts, purses, dresses, and even chokers. A mimic of the gorgeous flower, the rosette is to be taken as a token of elegance and class. However, I believe that the addition of this floral touch tends to cheapen the outfit. Starting as a 17th century shoe embellishment and evolving to the point of appearing on Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City as an it-girl accessory, these florals may not be gone for good.

Semi-Sheer

Trending in both women’s and men’s fashion, semi-sheer material has made a huge comeback. Originating in 1920’s female fashion, sheer material has been a mark of extremely high-profile clothing for the past century. Currently seen on slip dresses and tops, sheer material is a key layering piece displayed in countless closets. Because this fabric has been overtaken by fast fashion brands in the past decade, such as Shein and Windsor, this material does not carry the status it embodied previously. Nevertheless, it has become more popular than ever before due to mass production. Coming back in the summer season due to its cool nature, this trend will most likely be heading out with the warm weather.

Asymmetrical Hemlines

Originating recently, you’ve probably seen the asymmetric hemline on your Instagram feed, worn by middle-schoolers who are still developing a style of their own (if you don’t know who I’m talking about, it’s probably you). Also known as the “cut-out,” this style uses creative fabric cuts in order to ventilate the material to diffuse heat. Again, this was quickly adopted by fast fashion which aided in mass-production, causing the boom of Shein-esque dresses. Despite their commonality at concerts, asymmetrical hemlines won’t be able to maintain their popularity moving into the colder months, hopefully ending the trend for good.

Ruffle Patterns

Nothing speaks summer better than layered satin. Initially growing influence on TikTok, the multi-layered dress fabric has quickly risen in fame. Using the ruching in the fabric to flatter the figure while conveying the carefree idea of style, this trend has caught the attention of a wide target audience. Landing spots in Vogue and being featured in events such as the Met Gala has led this pattern to be marketed at a rather glamorous price. Despite the investment that is made when purchasing, however, I love this classy trend and hope it maintains its popularity.
