I scream and you scream for St. Louis’ frozen custard

If you know me, you know that I love ice cream. Dreamsicles, fudge bars, ice cream cones, all that jazz. However, nothing can beat a frozen custard turtle sundae to remind you of those balmy summer evenings.

And thus, the quest for the perfect frozen custard was born, inspired by the opening of a new custard spot in downtown Kirkwood: Andy’s.

Fritz’s

Proximity: 3

Seating: 4

Deliciousness: 3

Average: 3.5

With three locations, the closest being in O’Fallon, Fritz’s is no quick stop ice cream place, but is a staple for after-dinner ice cream fixes. It has fantastic seating, decent custard with a well-stocked variety of flavors and an amply sized parking lot. This is a great place to bring little kids or family.

The Custard Station

Proximity: 5

Seating: 3

Deliciousness: 1

Average: 3

I’m not going to lie, I hate the Custard Station. I’m sure those of us who are born and bred Kirkwoodians can’t get enough of it, but I find it genuinely disgusting. The custard is weirdly foamy and almost soapy, but the proximity is second to none. The seating area is okay but not terribly accommodating for large groups. They are also closed during the fall and winter which kind of stinks.

Andy’s

Proximity: 5

Seating: 4

Deliciousness: 4.5

Average: 4.5

Maybe it’s just the effect of its shiny new-ness, but this spot really impressed me. The custard was hand-scooped and delicious, the seating was admittedly average, the drive-thru is amazingly convenient and it’s located right in the heart of downtown Kirkwood. Andy’s is definitely my new allocated custard place.

Ted Drewe’s

Proximity: 2

Seating: 2

Deliciousness: 3

Average: 2.5

While Ted Drewe’s is definitely a St. Louis staple, I’ve never liked it. It’s comparatively far from Kirkwood, the custard is just kind of average for St. Louis, and don’t even get me started on the seating. More often than not I’ve ended up sitting on the curb across the street trying desperately to shield my ice cream from debris from the road.

Mr. Wizard’s

Proximity: 3

Seating: 3

Deliciousness: 4

Average: 3.5

Mr. Wizard’s was basically my childhood. Every time we’d go to my grandma’s house in Maplewood we’d stop by Mr. Wizard’s for a small twist cone. They’ve had recent renovations and now have a cute little roof over their seating area, but unfortunately for the cold weather fans among us, Mr. Wizard’s is closed in the fall and winter, but they have a tree lot for Christmas.
