Frame of mind: Yearbook wrap-up

Co editor-in-chiefs, Sally Pessin and Morgan Seibel had an “intimidating” undertaking of completing a known yearbook for the 2013-2014 school year. Starting with a blank slate and having no idea where to begin, the editorial board put their heads together and things began to fall into place.

“We knew we wanted to focus on the different perspectives people have about high school, because there are so many different types of people with different stories. So the theme is frame of mind because we wanted to capture everyone’s story and perspective,” Claire Hubert, junior, and next years’ co editor-in-chief, said.

In this year’s yearbook, students should see viewpoints from both the students and staff as it covers specific stories with unique angles and surveys to bring in another perspective of the students.

Specifically this year, the staff focused on improving the writing, pushing the angles and getting better coverage. In the profile section, Andrew Conroy photographed black and white portraits, which introduced a new twist and different look.

“This years’ book is sleek and modern. We wanted to get away from the ordinary and the cliché designs that are done a lot. We wanted to do something a little more interesting than that and something that would stand out.” Sally Pessin, senior, and current co editor-in-chief, said.

To make sure the yearbook was completed on time, the editorial board made sure that the staff got ahead by starting work over summer, insuring that everyone was on top of their assignments.

“While the new staffers are assigned deadlines, we have a summer deadline and they’ll be doing summer coverage. And summer is a huge part of everyone’s lives, so we wanted to make sure to document it appropriately,” Pessin said. “The editorial board then develops the theme and they are just trying to make the book better every single day.”

For next year, the editorial board has been to a conference to get planning underway, the staff has had two meetings and assignments for summer are approaching quickly.

“Already, all the underclassmen are working on 2014-2015 concept projects and they’re working on the look, how they want the book to feel, and what tone and personality they want to give off,” Mitch Eden, Pioneer advisor, said.
