Graduation at KHS

KHS’s Class of 2014 will never have to enter the school building again after May 17, but in their last few weeks at KHS they will be confronted with pre-graduation traditions, from the Gold K ceremony to senior exams.

“Everything gets crazy after spring break ends. All of a sudden you’ve got prom, the senior camping trip and AP tests coming at you at the same time,” Nick Lin, senior, said.

Aside from the testing and commotion around prom, many students experience a showering of awards around graduation, like the Gold K, which students can achieve by maintaining a cumulitive GPA above 3.5.

“I was really proud of my Gold K. It’s nice to get a little recognition for sticking it out four years, especially when you had to work as hard as I did,” Charlie Hooks, senior, said.

Students and staff alike take time to enjoy one another before the seniors’ final departure from KHS through activities like prom and the senior campout.

“The class of 2014 is spirited,” Mike Wade, senior class principal, said. “The least I can say is that they’ve helped me stay young.”
Dr. Havener, principal, will present a speech to the Class of 2014 on May 17, at approximately 7 pm in Chaifetz arena. Diplomas will then be given to every graduating student, and a party will be held afterwards to commemorate the students and their time at KHS.

The series of events which precede the Class of 2014’s graduation, including AP testing and senior exams, prove stressful to many seniors, but celebratory counterparts such as the Gold K and prom balance the stress with what seniors claim is a well deserved reward. “The Class of 2014 is finally discovering their identity. I’ve watched them grow into defined individuals over the course of the past four years and now they are truly KHS Pioneers,” Mike Wade, senior class principal, said.
