Walkoff winner

Tuesday, April 17 at the KHS Baseball Field, the Kirkwood JV baseball team took on the Seckman Jaguars, one of the only three teams to beat them this year.

At the top of the 7th inning the Pioneers were up 6-3. Mistakes were made by Kirkwood, and the eager Jaguars pounced on them to quickly tie the game at six.

A week earlier, Kirkwood faced off against Webster. With sophomore Connor Cline on the mound, the team was confident.

According to head coach David Drury, Cline was pulled out of the Webster game. He would then display great acts of late drama.

“In the bottom of the 7th I re-entered him to hit. He lead off with a triple to the wall. He later scored to end a very exciting game,” Drury said.

In the Seckman game, Cline nearly completed the same feat, but with more excitement.

“Cline was on the mound again. I pulled him just as I did in the Webster game. I re-entered him in the 6th inning. With the game tied at six, Connor was on deck to hit.  Ben Klinghammer led off with a pop out.” Drury said.  “Connor one upped his Webster theatrics by blasting a shot over the right field fence for a walkoff home run win.”

Cline was surprised by his own abilities in the Seckman game.

“I was feeling good from the week before,” Cline said. “I just got a pitch I liked and laid into it. I was surprised it went over the fence.”

One of Cline’s teammates, Jack Radt, sophomore, witnessed these events first hand.

“The whole team knew the ball was crushed. We all stood up. When we saw it go over we were yelling and screaming with joy. We then all ran to mob Cline at the plate,” Radt said.

Drury was floured with excitement to see his team win in walk off fashion.

“It was a very exciting ending, and very much a surprise to see a ball clear the fence. I was very happy for Connor and the rest of the team,” Drury said.
