As she sat down in class she was handed a note, opening it she found herself looking at a petition signed by her peers stating she should kill herself. Now, 13 years later, she is a world renowned popstar. Demi Lovato released a documentary on Oct. 17, 2017 that dove into the hardships she has faced. The documentary takes you through everything from her early childhood struggles with her birth father to being bullied in school. It showcases her struggle with bulimia, substance abuse and mental illness. Lovato’s documentary expresses her old, new and continuous battles with both herself and society’s expectations. Lovato courageously allows herself to be vulnerable with viewers as she finally addresses all her triumphs and downfalls along her journey to who she has become. While watching the film I felt I was having a conversation with the singer. The film allowed me to feel like I knew Lovato personally. By opening up, Lovato connects with her fans on a new level. Jumping around to cover multiple addictions and struggles within different points of her life, the film was hard to follow at times. Otherwise stunningly produced, “Simply Complicated” will have you laughing, crying and rethinking all you thought you knew about Lovato. Watch the 1 hour and 18 minute Youtube Original above.
