Which visiting author’s book should you read?

On Friday, March 25, a panel of young adult authors visited KHS and talked to students about their books and how they became authors. If you are interested in finding out which of their new works you should read, look below to take a quiz.

About the authors

Sabaa Tahir– Growing up in at her family’s 18-room motel in the California desert, Sabaa Tahir read as many fantasy and comic books as she could get her hands on. While working nights as a newspaper editor, she began to write An Ember in the Ashes. A fan of indie rock, and a guitar player, though not all that good, Sabaa confesses; this author is a fan of anything nerdy. She currently lives with her family in the San Francisco Bay Area.

April Genevieve Tucholke– April is the author of numerous books; Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, and its sequel, Between the Spark and the Burn. Her new book, Wink Poppy Midnight, has an eerie note to it that comes from April’s love of classic horror movies. Though she currently lives with her husband in Oregon, April has lived many places, including Scotland.

Karen Bao– A triple threat to say the least, Californian-raised Karen Bao is a writer, musician and an aspiring scientist. Karen began writing her book, Dove Arising, at seventeen. She can play violin, and hers happens to be sixty years older than her. Karen currently studies environmental biology at Columbia College in New York City.

Alison Goodman– Alison Goodman is the author of the Eon and Eona fantasy duology, and has recently released a new book called The Dark Days Club. This marks the start of her new Lady Helen series. It has been reviewed by Publishers Weekly as “a delicious collision of Regency romance and dark fantasy”. Alison calls it “Pride and Prejudice meets Buffy in English high society”. Alison loves all things Victorian, and is known for her expert English contra dance.
Alison is currently living in Melbourne Australia with her husband and their Jack Russell terrier in Melbourne, Australia.

Alwyn Hamilton– Born in Toronto, and jumping between Europe and Canada, Alwyn and her family ended up settling the small town of Beaune in France. As a child, Alwyn loved to read and write fantasy stories, often starring cross-dressing heroines. For college she attended Cambridge University and studied art history, which she used to help with her job at an auction house. She has a surprising number of books for someone who moves so much. Rebel of the Sands is her first book.

Rachel Hawkins– Born in Virginia and raised in Alabama, Rachel Hawkins tends to use words like “ya’ll” and “fixin’” quite a lot. (Not to mention anything below 60 degrees is freezing to her.) Before starting to write about witches and romance, Rachel was an English teacher for three years. When not writing, she likes to read, travel, and knit.
